Our Parish Vision: We are a welcoming and joyful spiritual home where people encounter Jesus, choose to follow him and become fully alive. We are missionary disciples helping all people to know, love, and serve Christ and His Kingdom.
This is our vision for everyone at St. Ignatius, including your children! Our goal is not “instruction” so much as it is helping children develop a lifelong, personal friendship with Jesus. We seek to support parents in their role to foster that relationship. We are committed to experimenting, innovating, and continuously improving our programs to ensure our children have the best experience possible. Here is what we’re looking forward to next year.
- No fee for Sunday Children’s Liturgy!
- “The Good Shepherd Atrium” option for young children
- A new, extended Confirmation preparation pathway
The Sunday Mass Experience
With the help of fantastic, energetic volunteers, we have been creating a dynamic experience for children during the 11:00am Sunday Mass. We aim to truly bring joy as your children participate in a community of prayer, learning, and fun!
How it works: On Sunday, at the beginning of the 11:00 Mass, children are called to the altar for a blessing, then they head downstairs. In the church hall, they enjoy an engaging presentation followed by small-group activities. The children return to their families before communion time.
- For children ages 3 to 11.
- Registration required, but there is no charge.
The Good Shepherd Atrium
What if children came to know Jesus in a special, peaceful space, with materials designed just for them? Though new to St. Ignatius, this approach is over sixty years old and has been embraced by communities throughout the world. Rooted in the principles of Montessori education and formally known as the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, this is a ministry for children that is based on the Bible and liturgy of the church. Young children engage in guided, individualized activity with specially designed hands-on materials. Learn more here and here.
- For children ages 3 to 6.
- Time: Sundays at 10:00.
- Cost: $150 for one child. $75 for each additional child.
First Communion Preparation
A series of six evening gatherings for parents and children over the course of the year provides a special opportunity for family closeness in exploring the power and beauty of First Communion. (Note: Children preparing for sacraments must be baptized and are expected to attend Children’s Liturgy or mass regularly for at least a year prior to receiving the sacrament.)
- For children at least 8 years old who have attended mass regularly for at least a year.
- Time: Once a month on Tuesdays, 6:15 to 7:30pm, from September to March.
- Cost: $150 for one child, $225 for two children.
Our vision statement emphasizes that members will choose to follow Jesus. Research indicates that older children are full of questions, love to explore ideas, and thrive when they can develop a personal connection with a mentor. In order for them to make a free choice, they need time and opportunity for engagement and reflection. So here at St. Ignatius, we are slowing down the Confirmation process to provide more time and space for young people to make the life-changing decision to follow Jesus in their daily lives. Monthly gatherings will center on building friendships and deepening faith through thoughtful conversations, high-energy activities, and engaging videos and readings. We’ve nicknamed this approach “Extreme Confirmation” because we hope that the extended timeline will bear strong fruit in the lives of our kids for many years. (Note: Students preparing for sacraments must be baptized and are expected to attend Sunday mass regularly as part of their preparation.)
- For Catholics at least 11 years old.
- Time: Once a month on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00, beginning in September 2018, with Confirmation to be celebrated in Winter 2020.
- Cost: $225 for one child, $325 for two children.
For Parents: Alpha!
At. St. Ignatius, we know that you are the most important person in your child’s faith journey, and we know that you want to do your best to help your children grow in a relationship with Jesus. We want you to feel confident… which means that parents need support as well! To that end, we strongly recommend that you attend an Alpha course at least once. (This means the minimum expectation is that at least one parent needs to do Alpha once during the nine-year time period when your child is in our program.) We have already begun seeing the positive impact Alpha has had on parents just like you, and we are confident that you will love your experience.
